Jesuit’s mission to develop men of faith and men for others is no more apparent than in the school’s annual Thanksgiving Drive, which — all told — spans two weeks and unites students, alumni, faculty, and staff in feeding more than 450 families in need throughout the greater New Orleans area. The drive has been conducted since at least 1927 when the Sodality placed boxes in each classroom to collect food items for the city’s poor. It is currently organized and executed by students under the guidance of Kevin Murphy ’00, director of the school’s Community Service Program, in partnership with Jesuit’s alumni.

5:30 a.m. Shopping

thanksgivingdrive_roberts_20161123_194

Blue Jays arrive early at Robert Fresh Market to purchase perishable items to top off their Thanksgiving baskets.

The day began bright and early at Robért Fresh Market where students, faculty, and staff met to purchase the perishable goods needed to complete the baskets already begun with non-perishable food items collected in homeroom. The grocery store was packed as people filled the aisles, carefully checking off their lists and accounting for every penny they had raised during the month.

7 a.m. Basket Packing

After shopping, students returned to campus and worked with their classmates to prepare the baskets for delivery. Each homeroom packed three or more boxes with food items, and several clubs, athletic teams, and organizations prepared additional baskets. The yard was double- and even triple-parked as students ferried bursting baskets from classrooms to their cars.

8 a.m. Prayer Service

Prior to delivery, the school community gathered in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs for a Thanksgiving prayer service. Ms. Susan deBoisblanc and senior Davis Martin spoke about the holiday’s greater meaning to the group of students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni.

Blue Jays Win 2 of 3 in Round Robin Play

basketball_20161122_ums-wright_009

Michael Hull and Will Hillery apply heavy pressure in the back court during Tuesday night’s win over UMS-Wright from Mobile. Jesuit’s tenacious defense led the Jays to a commanding victory.

The Jesuit basketball team posted two impressive victories after a sluggish opening game in the St. Charles Catholic Round Robin. Smothering defense and a break-out performance by Hunt Conroy helped move the Jays to 3-1 on the season.

On Wednesday night, the Jays endured a back-and-forth battle with the Comets of St. Charles Catholic, pulling ahead in the 3rd quarter behind a 28-point night for Hunt Conroy. Will Hillery tacked on 13 points of is own in the 53-48 victory. The team proved their might on hustle plays, as 25 of their points came off turnovers, and 19 came from offensive rebounds. The Jays commanded the offensive rebound tally 15-7.

Defense was the story on Tuesday night, as the Jays held UMS-Wright of Mobile to 34 total points on offense. Jesuit took advantage of weak point guard play in their Alabama opponent by applying full court pressure throughout the game. In the process, the Jays racked up 13 steals on the night and were able to capitalize on points in transition. Hunt Conroy led all scorers with 16 points, with Robert McMahon and Will Hillery adding 9 and 6 respectively. The final score was 51-34.

These Blue Jay victories came after a slow offensive night in the opening game against John Curtis. The Jays shot just 27% from the field compared to 39% for Curtis. Strong offensive play by Malik Morgan of Curtis was too much for the Blue Jay defense in the 35-58 loss.

The Jays next face off against Harrison Central of Lyman, MS on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 5:30 PM.

Tennis, Anyone? Jays Face Off with Brother Martin, Catholic High this Weekend

Freshman Jojo Sandoz has emerged as the Jays' second best player in fall practices.

Freshman Jojo Sandoz has emerged as the Jays’ second best player in fall practices.

Tennis fans have two opportunities to catch the Jesuit tennis team in rare fall action this weekend.

On Friday, Dec. 2, the Jays will participate in the inaugural Brother Martin/Jesuit fall challenge at the Hilton Rivercenter. The event was initiated by Brother Martin head coach Marcelo Chanes, who has dubbed it the “Amigos Forever Cup,” in recognition of the spirited but friendly rivalry that has emerged between the two schools in recent years.

Time constraints and court availability at the indoor facility led Chanes to put together a unique format, designed to get as many players involved as possible. The teams will play four doubles matches, followed by eight singles matches. Each match will be a total of 12 games. The team that wins the most overall games will be awarded the Amigos Forever Cup. Matches start at 5:30 p.m.

The next morning, Jesuit will hold a scrimmage with Catholic High at City Park, with doubles play starting at 11:00 a.m. and singles to follow. The Bears from Baton Rouge are the prohibitive favorites to take this year’s state championship.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Senior Luke Lingle unleashes a serve in doubles play against Catholic High on Nov. 19.

“I’d love to get a crowd out, especially for that Brother Martin match,” says head coach Travis Smith. “I think we could create a really great atmosphere at the Rivercenter and eventually build this into one of the state’s premier high school tennis showcases.”

Both events are the result of relationships built by Smith with Jesuit’s two biggest rivals at the 5A level.  “We could be aloof and dodge both of those teams until state,” says Smith. “But there are so few opportunities in high school tennis to play teams that can challenge us, and even beat us, from top to bottom. I’d much rather create as many big-event opportunities as possible for our boys to make team experience special. Of course it helps that Kyle (Jackson, the Catholic coach) and Marcelo are such good guys.”

Another upside to having these early season showdowns on the schedule is the competitive atmosphere they create in fall practices. “This tennis team is a meritocracy,” says Smith. “I don’t just make arbitrary decisions about our line-ups.  Playing against Catholic and Brother Martin is a privilege, and you have earn it on the court. Our guys have been beating each other up for two months now for these opportunities.”

Jesuit has already scrimmaged Catholic once this year. In that match, held on Nov. 19 in Gonzales, the Jays took 13 of 18 matches. But Catholic was without four of their top eight players, including their top two. The Bears’ best player, two-time defending state champion Nick Watson, was on his official college visit to LSU. Their No. 2 player, senior Andrew Bienvenu, was banged up after the previous night’s football playoff game and took the day off.

Sophomore Colin Meyer serves against Catholic High on Nov. 19.

Sophomore Colin Meyer serves against Catholic High on Nov. 19.

“It’s kind of like beating the Saints without Drew Brees, Brandin Cooks and both startling offensive tackles,” says Smith. “It doesn’t mean much.”

If Jesuit has any chance of repeating as state champions for a tenth consecutive year, they will have to do so largely on the shoulders of seniors Trey Hamlin, Jack Steib, and Graham Buck, all of whom played critical roles in last year’s state tournament.

But they will need some help. Catholic returns all of their top players from last season, a year in which Jesuit eked out their ninth straight state title by a single point. The Jays, meanwhile, got hit hard by graduation. “We lost three guys  who are among the best to ever lace up their sneakers at Jesuit,” says Smith, referring to Brandon Beck, Jacob Niehaus, and Jonathan Niehaus. “Those guys will be hard to replace.”

Freshman Jojo Sandoz has already staked his claim among the team’s top four. Beyond that, there are a slew of players fighting it out to be a part of Jesuit’s eventual eight-man contingent at regionals and state.

The final regional roster will be based largely on strategy. The big question? How many of the top four will end up playing singles and how many will play doubles? Regional rosters include two singles players and three doubles teams.

“We’ve got a history of going down to the wire with our personnel decisions,” says Smith. “That could well be the case again this year.”

Sophomore Cole LaCour has impressed coaches with his improvement.

Sophomore Cole LaCour has impressed coaches with his improvement.

Six players have emerged in early season practices and challenge matches as favorites for the remaining four slots. Seniors Leo Seoane and Luke Lingle, along with vastly improved sophomore Cole LaCour, are all doubles specialists. Senior Andrew Ryan and sophomore Dexter Webster excel at singles. Junior Christian Lacoste, the only one of the six with experience at the state tournament, is a dual threat.

Other team members include: juniors Paul Myers and John Nuttli; sophomores Colin Meyer and David Nimmo; and freshmen Tom Levy, Wes Melito, Sid Trouard, James Henican, and Luke Russo.

Jesuit Falls to West Jeff, 52 – 44, in CYO Opening Round

Will Landrieu and Michael LaForge apply full court pressure in Wednesday night's loss to West Jeff.

Will Landrieu and Michael LaForge apply full court pressure in Wednesday night’s loss to West Jeff.

It was a battle of the full court presses as the Blue Jays opened play in the annual CYO tournament. The fast-paced transition game saw West Jeff applying relentless pressure all game and scoring 22 of their 52 points off of Jesuit’s 22 turnovers.

Jesuit started the night with an early lead in a disciplined and careful attack, spreading the offense and picking up second attempts in the lane, while the Buccaneers of West Jeff struggled to put points on the board. The Bucs were able to narrow Jesuit’s lead to 1 point at the end of the first period and, as the second period began, quickly jumped ahead to a lead that they never lost.

Throughout the second and third quarters, the Blue Jays put in a full rotation of players trying to get the spark necessary to keep up with the pace set by the Buccaneers. Nick Artigues came off the bench to score 11 points, slashing to the goal and hustling on both sides of the ball. A late-game three pointer by Will Landieu got the bench and fans on their feet as the hopes of a rally was being mounted.

Will Hillery slips through West Jeff defenders on his way to basket in the fourth quarter.

Will Hillery slips through West Jeff defenders on his way to basket in the fourth quarter.

Will Hillery sparked the come-back effort, scoring many of his game-high 17 points off of steals and aggressive drives to the basket. Jesuit also stepped up its full court press defense in the fourth quarter, forcing many turnovers from West Jeff as the game drew toward a close. Jesuit even narrowed their deficit to three points in the final minutes, but West Jeff mounted a late rally to push the lead back up to eight at the final buzzer.

“We were in there during the first half,” Coach Chris Jennings told his players after the game. “West Jeff just wanted the game more than we did late in the game, and so they won it.”

The Blue Jays (3-3) resume play in the CYO tournament on Thursday night at 6 PM, taking on Ben Franklin at St. Paul’s in Covington. The tournament schedule and updates can be found at the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Tournament website.

Senior Graham Buck was a bright spot on an otherwise difficult Friday night for the Blue Jay tennis team, winning 15 games and dropping only nine.

Jesuit’s tennis team received a wake-up call courtesy of Brother Martin in the inaugural Amigos Forever Cup, held Friday, Dec. 2 at the Hilton Rivercenter indoor tennis facility.

The Crusaders  won 82 games on the evening to 62 for the Blue Jays in a unique format that rewarded margin of victory. The teams played four doubles matches and eight singles matches. Each match consisted of 12 games, and the scores were then added together to determine the outcome.

Jesuit actually performed well at the top of the singles line-up. Senior Jack Steib, senior Graham Buck, and freshman Jojo Sandoz won their matches at Lines 1, 2, and 3.

In doubles play, Buck teamed with senior Andrew Ryan for a win at Line 2.

But that was all the Jays could muster. Brother Martin won six matches and tied two others en route to their win. For current team members, it was the first head-to-head loss against an in-state opponent in their careers.

“Hats off to Brother Martin,” said coach Travis Smith. “That was some good high school tennis tonight, and they earned the victory.”

The Amigos Forever Cup was conceived and named by Brother Martin head coach Marcelo Chanes, a native of Chile, who also serves as director of tennis at the Rivercenter. The name recognizes the spirited but friendly rivalry that has developed between the two schools since Smith and Chanes took over the respective programs.

Jesuit salvaged the weekend on Saturday morning, when they rebounded to take 13 of 24 matches from Catholic High in a scrimmage at City Park.

MCJROTC members collect boxes of toys from homerooms during last year’s drive.

Annually, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve collects Christmas gifts for children in need during its nationwide Toys for Tots drive. In conjunction, Jesuit’s MCJROTC participates in the program on a local level, gathering as many toys as possible to help the less fortunate in the greater New Orleans area.

Coming off the heels of last year’s highly successful drive, which collected nearly 1,000 toys, the MCJROTC is again calling fellow Blue Jays to be generous during the holiday season. Hoping to collect even more gifts than last year, the MCJROTC is sponsoring a homeroom contest now through Friday, Dec. 9. Students should drop off new, unwrapped toys in the boxes provided in their homerooms. The homeroom in each grade level which collects the most toys will win a doughnut party at the beginning of the second semester.

Founded in 1947, Toys for Tots aims to deliver a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters and assist them in becoming responsible, productive, and patriotic citizens.

Though Christmas is still a couple of weeks away, Jesuit’s Student Council is helping Blue Jays get into the holiday spirit with a week’s worth of festive lunchtime events. Though the annual highlight is a homeroom door decorating contest, students will find many ways to make merry before exams and a much deserved break.

Tuesday: Christmas Caroling and Tree Decorating

20161206_christmas_week_caroling_0181During lunch on Tuesday, students sang Christmas carols and decorated a tree in the Student Commons. Over 500 candy canes were used on the tree and were only available for consumption by those brave few who sang along with the carolers.

Monday: Christmas Cookies and A Christmas Story

pvd_0196

On Monday, students enjoyed a whopping 20 pounds of cookies while they watched the holiday classic A Christmas Story during lunch in the Commons. Though no one had to endure the embarrassment of wearing a pink bunny onesie, great fun was had by all.

Check out the rest of the week’s activities:

Wednesday: Gingerbread House Building Contest with a special visit by St. Nick Legier

Thursday: Follow the North Star Scavenger Hunt sponsored by Campus Ministry, as well as Door Decorating Contest

Friday: School-wide Tacky Sweater Contest and Christmas Karaoke

Blue Jays Honor Jesuit’s Patroness at Mass

school-mass_20161208_immac-conception_001On Thursday, Dec. 8, students, faculty, and staff gathered for Mass in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs to celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the school’s patroness. Students dressed in coat and tie to celebrate the occasion.

Mass was celebrated by Fr. Anthony McGinn, S.J. Concelebrating  priests from Jesuit’s staff were Fr. Kevin Dyer, S.J. (chaplain), Fr. Billy Huete, S.J. (theology), and Fr. Donald Saunders, S.J. (theology). Visiting priest who also concelebrated were Fr. Randy Gibbens, S.J. ’95, the vocations promoter for the province, and Fr. James F. Goeke, S.J., who is the novice director serving in Grand Coteau. Fr. Goeke also brought eight first-year novices who are visiting New Orleans fresh off their 30-day retreat of The Spiritual Exercises.

The Mass also included special guests, visiting Jesuit to support three new inductees to the Hall of Honors: Br. William J. Dardis, S.J. ’58, Mr. Paul C. Frederick, and Mr. Frank J. Misuraca, Sr.

In his homily, Fr. McGinn called for attendees to remember the virtues of patience and diligence that all mothers and fathers exemplify, especially considering these virtues in the life of Mary as the mother of Jesus. He also challenged those present to exercise these virtues in balance, pushing themselves where appropriate and yet allowing themselves time to develop into the people God has created them to be.

school-mass_20161208_immac-conception_025After communion, Fr. McGinn returned to the pulpit to recognize the three inductees to the Hall of Honors. “Jesuit’s great strength comes from many developments that have taken place over the years since it’s founding on this day in 1847, while still being true to the core values that remain,” began McGinn. “In its recent past (and by ‘recent,’ I mean the last 60 years), Br. Dardis, Paul Frederick, and Frank Misuraca have vitally important to that development, and I thank them for their tremendous contribution to Jesuit High School.”

Br. Dardis then spoke a few words about his gratitude for the special recognition and his life as a Jesuit brother, most especially for all the young men who have come through Jesuit. He said, “they have been a great gift to me from Almighty God.”

Next, Paul Frederick spoke of the great joy of his last three years at Jesuit, having the opportunity to visit the classrooms and write reviews for every teacher twice each year. “Like Thomas,” he said “who had to see the resurrected Christ in to believe, many students are not convinced of the great change that takes place from the time they enter Jesuit until they leave to college. My experience in seeing the learning taking place over these years has taught me, without a doubt, that this change is real.”

Immediately after Mass, the inductees, their families, and friends proceeded to the Hall of Honors for the unveiling of the dedication and then to a reception in St. Ignatius Hall.

When the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) established a new high school in New Orleans on Dec. 8, 1847, they placed it under the special protection of our Blessed Mother. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrates Mary’s conception free of original sin. During Advent, may she who was conceived without sin continue to guide all members of the Blue Jay family into that life of Christ’s grace which bring joy to the hearts of all.

On Thursday, Dec. 8, Br. William J. Dardis, S.J. ’58, Mr. Paul Frederick, and Mr. Frank Misuraca were inducted into Jesuit’s Hall of Honors, marking the first induction ceremony held since 2009. Fr. Anthony McGinn, S.J. introduced the inductees during a school-wide Mass celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which was followed by an unveiling ceremony in the Hall of Honors and reception in St. Ignatius Hall. The Hall of Honors was established in 1974 to recognize those — from teachers to staff to clergy, and sometimes all three — who have made outstanding contributions to Jesuit High School.

bro_dardis_bw_cropBrother William J. Dardis, S.J. ’58

Brother Billy Dardis has served Jesuit High School for 53 years, seemingly as a “man for all seasons.”

Homeroom teacher; maintenance department director; handyman; grounds keeper;  phone repair man;  bus driver; leader of alumni; moderator of the cheerleaders and other organizations; altar boy; recorder of our dearly deceased; custodian of institutional knowledge; fighter for the underdog; supporter, friend, and tutor of struggling students; promoter of Blue Jay Spirit; consummate chaperone; designated dancer; friend to all; loving colleague; caretaker of JHS — only begin to describe this member of the Class of 1958. His classroom is the yard, the cafeteria, the back field, the gym, the Student Commons, the maintenance shop, the school bus, and his teaching is the practical lessons of life. His learning project is the Mission and Thanksgiving drives, the Homecoming game, the dances, Open House, Celebration, Bazaar, and the Commencement Luncheon.

He is an active participant in the formation of students and colleagues alike. Simply put, Br. Dardis is the super glue that has helped hold Jesuit together for more than five decades.

In 1988, Br. Dardis was presented with The North American Martyrs Award by Jesuit’s Board of Directors in recognition of his unselfish service to the school.

His signature greeting of “Darlin” immediately welcomes us into the world of this proud New Orleanian, a world in which service to others defines his relationship with God. In 2010, he was awarded the school’s Profile Award, an annual recognition of faculty excellence.

During his 53 years of serving Jesuit High School, one iconic post-Katrina image of Br. Dardis adjacent to the newly lighted Jesuit sign atop the school captures the essence of this holy servant: he is indeed a source of comfort and security, a bright light in our midst, God in action in our lives.

frederick_scan_bw_cropPaul Frederick

Mr. Paul Frederick, who started at Jesuit in 1955, walked the halls of Jesuit for almost six decades, making it a better school every step of the way.

He was a teacher, the prefect of discipline, director of faculty, academic assistant principal, principal, and then teacher again. In his final years at Carrollton & Banks, he assisted the administration in the professional development of faculty, sharing his passion for instruction with those who followed in his enormous footsteps. For Mr. Frederick, it all started and ended in the classroom. He was a mainstay in the Modern Foreign Language department as a Spanish teacher, eventually serving as department chair.

The legacy he leaves includes the development of the rotating schedule, Jesuit’s grading system, curriculum enhancements, the student code of conduct, and the faculty handbook. Immeasurable is the multitude of students whom he helped prepare for college and life.

Former principal Mike Giambelluca described Frederick as “the absolute model of discipline, scholarship, hard work, and Christian charity.”

Another colleague, Mr. Gary Mannina, who became principal of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School after his days at Jesuit, remembers Frederick as an imposing presence. What Mannina respects most about Frederick is his “passion and enormous commitment not only to instruction but to the education – in the Latin sense educere, to bring forth, to raise young men.”

He was an outstanding listener, which assisted him greatly in his relationships with students and fellow faculty. Well before “Dancing With The Stars” became a hit television program,” Mr. Frederick and his wife Priscilla taught ballroom dancing to members of Jesuit’s Homecoming Court.

Mr. Paul Frederick will long be remembered and appreciated for his professionalism, dedication, and service to Jesuit High School.

frank-misuraca-assorted_bw_cropFrank Misuraca

Frank Misuraca’s home run career at Jesuit was of the tape measure variety.

Misuraca known to his friends and former teammates as “Mizzy,” was the head coach of Jesuit baseball from 1967-1981. During that span his teams tallied four district championships (1970, 1972, 1976, and 1979), two American Legion district titles (1975 and 1980), a pair of prep state championships (1979 and 1980), and three Legion state crowns (1975, 1979, and 1980). His 1980 Legion team won the Mid-South Regional in Memphis, Tennessee, before moving to the American Legion World Series.

Many of his players took the field collegiately, including a dozen members of his 1980 squad. The Times-Picayune called Misuraca’s 1980 group one of the city’s all-time top ten baseball teams. He coached a handful of players who went on to play professionally. Two of them, Will Clark’82 and Jim Gaudet’73 made it to the Majors.

As challenging as he could be to top players, Misuraca reserved a soft spot and respect for those blessed with less talent but equal drive and heart. When a reserve pinch runner fell just a few steps off of first base while attempting to steal second and was embarrassingly tagged out, Coach Misuraca consoled the player in his own affable way. “You just started your slide too early.”

Misuraca spent a short time as an assistant football coach at Jesuit and was the head coach of the school’s 1965 state championship gymnastics team.

After coaching, Misuraca served as assistant to the president at Jesuit before taking over as athletic director. He held the position twice: from 1978 to 1981 and from 1986-2007. In 1991 and 1996, he was voted Louisiana Athletic Director of the Year by the LHSAA. In 1996, he received the National Athletic Director of the Year Award.

In 1976, Misuraca was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Southeastern Louisiana University, where he was a First Team NAIA All-American 3rd Baseman. In 1995, he was inducted into the Louisiana American Italian Sports Hall of Fame.

In 2001, he became a member of the LHSAA Hall of Fame. In 2012, Misuraca was inducted into the Allstate Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame and the New Orleans Prep Sports Hall of Fame.
