Dave Schof ’56  was a four-year band letterman at Jesuit, but put down his saxophone while he was in grad school. Many years later, eight of his grandchildren (who all play in bands at Jesuit and Dominican) brought music back to his life and, ultimately, to create his dream group – Paw Paw’s Band – in which he plays alongside his grandkids.

The family musical lineup is Jesuit sophomore Douglas Schof on clarinet; Dominican sophomore Scarlett Abrams on clarinet; Jesuit senior Jared Abrams on tenor sax; Dominican sophomore Kristina Krizan on clarinet; Jesuit junior Kenneth Krizan on alto sax; Dominican sophomore Bridget Adam on alto sax; and Jesuit pre-freshman Dominic Schof on drums.

The Jesuit lacrosse team needed two overtimes to beat rival St. Paul's, 6-5, on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Senior Billy McMahon advances the ball against St. Paul’s in Covington on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Blue Jays won the exhibition match, 6-5.

Senior Cameron Guernsey, who led his team with five assists against Lafayette a week earlier, scored the most important goal against St. Paul’s on Saturday, January 24. Guernsey’s goal in double overtime gave the the Blue Jays a 6-5 win over the Wolves in a “friendly” at Hunter Stadium in Covington.

Guernsey, who is just as comfortable putting it into the net as he is dishing it off to his teammates, finished with three goals.

The exhibition game, which doesn’t count toward team records, was scheduled when directors of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic cancelled the weekend tournament due to unplayable field in Lafreniere Park.

Junior Rob Hinyub and senior Eric Wright split time in goal.

The Blue Jays are officially 1-0 after trouncing Lafayette, 16-2, on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Jesuit won state championships in 2012, 2013, and 2014, by beating St. Paul’s in the finals.

The Blue Jays will be in Texas on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 to compete in a tournament hosted by Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas.

Members are students who have completed four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and in addition have completed or are enrolled in a fifth semester mathematics course, providing their mathematics work was done with distinction (minimum B average). The main focus of Mu Alpha Theta is the interaction of our chapter with those of other area schools. This is accomplished through monthly district meetings, local tournaments, and an annual state convention.

Career Day alumni and speakers gathered in St. Ignatius Hall before they presented to today’s Blue Jays. (Click photo to view photo gallery.)

Jesuit’s alumni served as a great resource to today’s Blue Jays on Career Day.

Each January, alumni return to their alma mater – some traveling from Baton Rouge – to provide the students with practical advice about their various careers. This year, 35 alumni presented on 27 different careers. Also, Chris Hannan ’00 spoke to the 8th, 9th, and 10th graders about career paths in general, using his own journey as an example. Hannan practices law with the New Orleans office of the Baker Donelson law firm and, at the same time, is an award-winning poet. A new offering this year for the juniors and seniors was Non-Profit Management with Gerald Duhon ’85 and William Stoudt ’07 presenting. Popular career presentations were Accounting, Business, Engineering, and Finance. Alumni look to give back to Jesuit in various ways. Their participation in Career Day is one of the more meaningful ways of reconnecting and giving back for the benefit of today’s students.

Senior Ben Ainsworth led with a 595 series against Holy Rosary on Jan. 26, 2015.

Jesuit bowling picked up a 20-7 victory over Holy Rosary at AMF All Star Lanes in Kenner on Monday, Jan. 26.

The Blue Jays shot the highest team game of the day with 1,200 in the opening game of the match. Senior Ben Ainsworth led the team with a 595 series.

Coach John Prejean said he is honored to return this season at the request of the five returning seniors. “How can you say no to that?” he said. This year, he is assisted by his son, Andrew Prejean ’14, who competed with these returning players in the 2014 state semifinals.

Coach Prejean added, “I feel like we have a legitimate chance to compete in the final four again.”

Jesuit Opens Season with Jamboree vs. Brother Martin

Jesuit opened the bowling season with a jamboree against a strong Brother Martin team on Jan. 16 at AMF All Star Lanes in Kenner. Though the Blue Jays took a loss in the non-district game, they proved to be an able competitor this season.

Seniors Brett Lorio, Chris Ainsworth, and Ben Ainsworth, and junior Peyton Hidalgo all had game-high scores over 200.

Blue Jay Spirit was abundant at the Jan. 21st gathering of alumni who reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jesuit hosted the reception at Restaurant Il Fornaio at Levi Plaza featuring food, fun, and lots of Blue Jay camaraderie. Blue Jays from 1960 to 2007 shared stories of their days at Carrollton and Banks. And the advancement office staff on hand provided a capsule view of Jesuit today. The opportunity to be with other Blue Jays drew Darrel Schexnayder ’80 from Sacramento, three hours away!

The connection of the Bay Area Jays will only be enhanced as a leadership team is poised to launch Jesuit’s latest alumni chapter. With the wisdom of veterans Charles McClain ’60. Dick Eigenbrod ’61, and Adam Gambel ’72 and the leadership of Charles Zewe ’93 and Joe Balfantz ’98, the Bay Area Alumni Chapter is sure to be active.

Johnny Giavotella ’05 spoke to Blue Jays at morning assembly.

Major Leaguer Johnny Giavotella ’05 inspired today’s Blue Jays at Friday’s morning assembly. “Respect your classmates, work hard, and have a positive attitude, even through adversity,” Giavotella told the assembled students. “That formula has worked for me. I’m 5’8″, 180 lbs and have no business playing Major League baseball. But I’ve worked very hard to get where I am.” Where Giavotella is, is with the Los Angeles Angels, vying for a roster spot as a second baseman. Drafted out of UNO by Kansas City, he played for the Royals the past three years. Giavotella reports to spring training on Feb. 19.

From time to time, distinguished alumni return to speak to Blue Jays at Morning Assembly as part of the Alumni Speaker Series. Current Blue Jays are inspired as they hear how alumni are applying the knowledge and character traits they obtained from their Jesuit education. As alumni speakers share stories about their lives and the paths that led them back to their alma mater, it serves a valuable role in inspiring this generation of Blue Jays.
